Getting Started

As you prepare to begin Math 140 Online, I recommend that you do the following things as quickly as possible, and certainly within the first couple of days of the semester.
1. Send an email to the instructor:
Please send me an email at BaarsonMonaG@jccmi.edu as soon as you read this getting started
item. In your email, please send me your contact information (name, address, and phone
number). I will send you an email back verifying I received your message. This will let me be
sure that you have a working email. If you do not hear back from me within two days after you
send your email, please contact me by phone at 517-796-8579.
2. Read the Course Requirements found in the Course Syllabus under
What do I have to do to get a grade for this class?
3. Read the information about the Grading Scale .
4. Download and Print the Class Calendar for Assignments and Due Dates,
the Weekly Class Calendar , the Math 140 Semester Homework , and the
Suggested Practice Problems Table
5. Be sure you have the necessary materials:

6. Read the Announcements .
Always check the announcements on a regular basis. I will keep you
posted on any changes that need to be made to the course, where you
should be in the progress of the course, and give general information.
7. Register for the course in MyMathLab.
We will be using MyMathLab/CourseCompass for all of our homework assignments, all of
our quizzes, and all of our unit exams. (We will only do a Midterm Exam, a Final Exam, and
two writing assignments in a paper and pencil format.)
It is extremely important that you get registered with MyMathLab/CourseCompass as soon
as possible so that you can begin to do the homework and take the quizzes and the unit exams.
The instructions for registering for the course in MyMathLab are as follows:
1. After getting on the internet, type in the address: www.mymathlab.com
2. Click on Register.
3. On the next page, in the student section, click on "Go to www.coursecompass.com"
4. On the next page, you will see what you need before you start the registration process.
You will need the following three items of information:
1. A Valid Email Address
2. Course ID #: baarson85862
3. Student Access Card:
Your textbook, if purchased at the Jackson Community College Bookstore,
was bundled with several resources, including MyMathLab.
In the MyMathLab package, you will find a Student Access Card.
Please Note: If you did not purchase your textbook at the Jackson Community
College Bookstore, you will need to purchase MyMathLab separately. You can do this
online using a credit card or the bookstore will order it for you.
5. Follow the online registration instructions. There are four steps to registering for
MyMathLab/CourseCompass.
1. Access Information
2. Course ID
3. Account Information
4. Confirmation and Summary
8. Fill out and return the Proctor Selection Form
Begin to consider the format in which you choose to have your exams
proctored and fill out the Proctor Selection Form and return it to me.
If you are on campus, you may return this form to me (by the due date)
by giving to the secretary in James McDivitt Hall to put in my faculty
mailbox.
Otherwise, return this form to me (by the due date) via U.S. Mail at the
