Various Types of Graphs – Topic 1
Material to Supplement MTH 110: Prealgebra Online

On these sites you will find a variety of graphs.  Remember, in this course we will only study the circle graph or pie chart, pictographs, bar graphs and line graphs.  You may “skip over” the information from the other types of graphs.  When you go to a site, click the "back arrow" in your browser menu bar to return to this site.

Activity 1:  Visit http://www.twingroves.district96.k12.il.us/ScienceInternet/ChartsGraphs.html and read about the bar graph, line graph and circle graph.  Note that the line graph and bar graphs both have titles and labels on both axes.  The circle graph as a title with each sector shaded and a legend including percentages given.  Pictographs were not included on this website.

Activity 2:  Visit http://www.mathleague.com/help/data/data.htm and click on line graph, pie charts and bar graphs.  Read the information about each type of graph.  Pictographs are not included on this website.

Activity 3:  Visit http://www.ais.msstate.edu/AEE/Tutorial/graphictypes.html  This site provides an excellent summary of each type of graph.  Read the information about the line, bar, pictograph and pie chart.  You will need Adobe Acrobat to see the graphs.  If you do not have it on your machine, it can be downloaded by clicking on the icon on this site and following the directions.  Warning:  This page says that a bar graph is a histogram.. In truth, there are subtle differences between the two including that obvious difference that histograms are to have touching bars while bar graphs usually have separated bars.  It would be correct to say there are similar.

Activity 4:  Visit http://www.ais.msstate.edu/AEE/Tutorial/choosinggraphs.html for more information on which type of graph best fits the information you want to display.

Activity 5:  Visit http://www.strategiccomm.com/usecharts.html for more information on which type of graph to choose.  This is a sophisticated site but I think you will find the information helpful.  As you read to the end of the site you will find names of charts we will not be studying.  Don’t worry about not knowing that information.
