Competency Tests must be passed in order to pass the class,
but do not count toward your grade in the course.

Think about this as a 2-part process.

PART 1: There are three competency topics: integers, fractions and decimals You MUST pass all competency topics.  Any student who does not pass all exams will receive a 0.0 for his/her course grade, regardless of grades received on other required work.

PART 2:  Students must successfully complete required coursework in addition to the competency exams.  Your grade will depend on your success on required coursework.  You must complete all Exams to pass the course.

Exams 600 points (Exam 1 = 200 points, Exam 2 = 150 points, Final Exam = 250 points)
  • All exams are to be  proctored.
  • Solutions are to be hand-written and will be graded on completeness of your work (process of doing problem) as well as your answer. This means that you receive some credit for a partially complete process (even if the answer is not correct), and you do not get full credit for sloppy or incomplete work (even if the answer is correct).
  • Calculators cannot be be used on competency exams.  A scientific calculator can be used on Exam 1, Exam 2 and the Final Exam.
  • Notes cannot be used on any exam.  Some notes will be included as part Exam 1, Exam 2 and the Final Exam.  Go to Review for Tests (Topic 6) and look at the Review for a specific Pie to see the notes that will be included with the Exams.
  • Exam 1 will cover Pies 1 and 2.  So, study the Reviews for Pie 1 and Pie 2 to get ready for this test.  It will have 20 problems on it.
  • Exam 2 will be cumulative.  It will include 8-10 problem types from Exam 1.  The rest of the 20 problems will be from Pie 3.
  • The Final Exam will be cumulative.  It will have 20 problems, of which about 10-12 will be from Pie 4.
ALEKS 400 points @ 100 points per Pie
  • There are 4 Pies in the MTH 110 course you are taking.

Grading of Pies...One Pie looks like this

How the grading works...

When you complete Pie 1 you will receive the percentage of completion as your points.  Each Pie equals 100 points.  The same process will be followed for Pies 2 , 3 and 4.

At the end of the course, I will take your points for Pie 4 and move you back through all of the Pies.  If you had a low score on Pie 1,  2 or 3 and learned more material after completion of Pie 4 then I will raise the score on that(those) Pies

Stuff happens...

Occasionally someone is sailing along, takes an assessment and really "bombs."   I will give you the points for the highest percentage you received on a Pie but you cannot go forward until you redo the material you missed.  I can request that you retake the assessment, but I cannot put you back where you were.  If you want to retake the assessment please email and tell me you want me to request an assessment for you.
