About  Homework, Attendance and Participation (including in-class quizzes)

  • One or more quizzes will be given most class periods. They will contain material that has been previously covered or that has been covered during that class period.  Quizzes will be given at different times during class and cannot be made up for any reason.

  • Attendance may be taken in lieu of a quiz.

  • Homework consists of two parts.  Part one consists of completion of assigned homework problems from the text.  They will be assigned the class prior to when the problems are due.  Problems are due at the beginning of the class period.  Homework is to be done sequentially with problems and answers clearly marked and supporting documentation clearly and orderly written.  Some homework problems will have a “W” by them.  This means that in addition to doing the problem you are to write out the thinking (steps and reasons) you used in solving the problem.  Part two consists of writing the definitions and concepts for the sections covered in the next class in “your own informal language”.  This means your work will not be exactly like what is in the textbook or another students’s work.

About extra credit….“The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra credit not be offered in mathematics courses.  In order to foster a collegiate environment, maintain the integrity of student grades, and provide for proper student placement and advancement through sequenced courses, the department believes this to be in the best interests of both students and faculty. Extra credit is understood to include bonus points on a test or assignment, separate extra credit assignments, and other forms of providing opportunities for more than 100% credit.”

2► Late Work Policy

  •  Exams are to be taken during class on the day announced.  If you must miss a test or the final exam, contact me before the test is given in class to make arrangements for a make-up.  Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given and you will be earn a 0.0 for the test.

  • Homework is due at the beginning of the class period and will not be accepted past the first 5 minutes of the class period.

  • Attendance and/or in-class quizzes will be taken at/given at various times during the class period.  If you are not in attendance at the time, you will earn a 0.0.

  •  Incompletes will be given only in accordance with JCC policy. (Excerpt from JCC policy; contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.)  A student may request an incomplete from the instructor. The incomplete will be granted only if the student can provide documentation that his or her work up to that point is sufficient in quality, but lacking in quantity, due to circumstances beyond the student’s control. Furthermore, a written plan for making up the missing work within one semester must be completed by the student.  Incompletes are not given to keep a student from failing.

  • Although you may be dropped when Participation Grades are given, it is your responsibility to withdraw from the course.  Check the Academic Calendar on JCC’s website for the withdrawal date.
