GRADING...

1► Course Requirements and Grading System

  • IMPORTANT: There is a competency exam in this course.

    • You may use no notes or calculators on the competency exam.

    • You must pass the competency exam to pass the course.  But, the grade on the competency exam does not count toward the grade in the course.

    • If you do not pass the competency exam, but receive a 2.0 or above on the coursework, you will receive a 1.0 for the course.

    • The concepts covered on the competency exam will be fractions, decimals, ratio, proportion, and percent.  You will have 3 opportunities to pass the competency exam.

    • The Competency Test must be completed and passed by start of class Tuesday, October 23.

    • The Competency Test (1st try) will be give the first 20 minutes of class on August 28.

    • The 2nd and 3rd testing times must be taken outside of class time.  Make arrangements to take it during my office hours.

  • You must successfully complete required coursework in addition to passing the competency exam.  All Learning Components, and all Exams including the Final Exam must be completed to pass the course.

Exams
Final Exam

60% of grade @ 15% each

  • There will be three exams and a final exam.

  • Exams will be hand-written and graded on completeness of your work (process of doing problem) as well as your answer. This means that you receive some credit for a partially complete process (even if the answer is not correct), and you do not get full credit for sloppy or incomplete work (even if the answer is correct).

  • Calculators can be used on exams.

  • One sheet of notebook paper (both sides) may be used for notes

Exams can be taken early with permission.  Generally exams cannot be taken late.  However…sometimes situations occur that are beyond our control.  These times are infrequent.  But, in case of an extreme situation, the following procedure must be followed to make up the exam:

1.       I must be notified on the day of the exam, before class begins, that you will be missing the exam.

2.       The missed exam must be taken before I return the exams to the class.

Since you know the dates of the exams for the entire semester, it is expected that all appointments and activities you need to attend will be made at times other than test day.

R
equired homework problems will be given no later than the class period prior to when the problems are due.  Problems are due at the beginning of the class period.  Homework is to be done sequentially with problems and answers clearly marked and supporting documentation clearly and orderly written.  Some homework problems will have a “W” by them.  This means that in addition to doing the problem you are to write out the thinking (steps and reasons) you used in solving the problem.

About extra credit….“The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra credit not be offered in mathematics courses.  In order to foster a collegiate environment, maintain the integrity of student grades, and provide for proper student placement and advancement through sequenced courses, the department believes this to be in the best interests of both students and faculty. Extra credit is understood to include bonus points on a test or assignment, separate extra credit assignments, and other forms of providing opportunities for more than 100% credit.”

  • Incompletes will be given only in accordance with JCC policy. (Excerpt from JCC policy; contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.)  A student may request an incomplete from the instructor. The incomplete will be granted only if the student can provide documentation that his or her work up to that point is sufficient in quality, but lacking in quantity, due to circumstances beyond the student’s control. Furthermore, a written plan for making up the missing work within one semester must be completed by the student.  Incompletes are not given to keep a student from failing.

  • Although you may be dropped when Participation Grades are given, it is your responsibility to withdraw from the course.  Check the Academic Calendar on JCC’s website for the withdrawal date.
