Entering and Plotting Data Sets

Entering Information from a Data Table

In order to enter data into the calculator you must first push the black STAT button (just left of the arrow keys).  To create a data table we need to Edit.  Since "Edit" is the first option on the list of options, you can type the number 1, or simply push ENTER

If someone has already entered data into your calculator (there are numbers in the columns of the table) you must clear these out.  To do so, use your arrow keys to move to the column header "L1".  Push the CLEAR button.  It will seem that nothing has happened, but as soon as you use the arrow keys to move off the "L1", all the numbers in that column will vanish.  Use this technique to clear the column "L2" as well.

Now you can enter your own data.  Simply move to the place you want your numbers and begin typing them in.  Notice that the ENTER key will move you down within a column, not across to the next column, so it is usually faster to enter all the x-values into L1 first, and then enter all the y-values into L2.

When you are finished, recheck your table for accuracy.  Note that you can easily change a value: just use your arrow keys to move to the number you want to change and type the new number.  Once you are satisfied, leave the table by pushing 2nd QUIT (QUIT is above the MODE key right next to the yellow 2nd button).

Drawing a Scatterplot of your Data:

You will be drawing your scatterplot on the same axes you graph functions.  Therefore, you will want to start by pushing Y= and either clearing or deselecting any functions you have typed in.  If you do not do this, your scatterplot will plot on top of the graph you last did.

Next, push the WINDOW button, and choose settings that seem reasonable based on your data.  Hint: Look at the first data column (the x-values).  Set Xmin somewhat smaller than the smallest value in that column, and set Xmax somewhat larger than the largest value in that column.  Similarly, use the second data column (the y-values) to help you decide on Ymin and Ymax.

Now push 2nd STATPLOT.  Note that STATPLOT is above the Y= button.  You will get a list of options.  Select the first option by pushing ENTER.  You will get a new list of options.  Use the arrow keys to move to the word "On" and push ENTER.  This turns the plot on.  The rest of the settings should already be correct, but check them:  You want the first "Type" of plot (the one with all the little dots), Xlist should be L1 and Ylist should be L2.  You can use any of the "Marks", but I like the first option, the little squares, because they show up well on the plot.

Once you have all your settings the way they should be, push the GRAPH button and you should see your scatterplot.
