I would advise anyone starting this course to be prepared to put time and effort into this class. It wasn't a cake walk, but it was managable. I feel I learned a lot. This was my first online class and if I can do it anyone can!
brush up on your algebra and learn Excel BEFORE you start:) Make sure you have lots of peripheral support! Use those tutorials from the start, know you can skip ahead when doing the test questions and come back to the ones you skipped because often the latter questions are easier and with so few per test, you don't want to get hung up on a hard problem AND miss some you could've gotten right. Take little notes with the homework assignments and as well as how to begin that problem in Excel or PHStat so you can have a "quick reminder" for the tests.
Hang on loosely
Be ready to be challenged on a computer literacy level! Taking statistics as an online course is very challenging on a technical level.
Set aside time each week to do this course. Don't wait till the last minute.
I would advise a student to first concentrate on learning excel before delving too deep into the course
Two computer monitors
Don't procrastinate!
| To stay on top of your homework,
and not wait till the last minutes to do everything. Also this
course is alot easier to do when you have multiple computers.
Also use the tutorials that are given for help, they are a tremendous help!!! |
Make sure you use the excel tutorials and ask questions if you dont understand.
Definitely have access to the textbook, and Excel experience helps.
Do each module in this order: 1. Read book and powerpoints 2. Do Excel assignments 3. Do online homework 4. Do the test for the chapter 5. Complete the project Add to the discussion board as you are inspired or have something you need help with. It is a great resource. When I did the modules in this order, I did much better!
I would suggest the student to work on the Excel Projects before doing any other homework.
GO TO THE STUDY GUIDE IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The study guide, which I didn't stumble on untilabout halfway through the course. It was my saving grace - cut my study time in half and made getting the grades so much easier.
Do the excel tutuorials they help.

| View the discussion forums at
least once per day. These often have little bits of information
and help regarding a particular assignment/project. I often
found that a question that I had, many people would have, and it
would be discussed and explained further on the message board.
Also, keep on top of the assignments. Three weeks seems like a long time, but not really. |
make sure you have plenty of time to do your assignments and don't wait until the last minute. It's not difficult just very time consuming.
Set a schedule for yourself to complete each assignment and stick to it. This class requires a lot of dedication and commitment. You'll make it though! :)
Avoid taking this class online if you can
Make sure you are familiar with excel prior to beginning, it will save you a lot of frustration/time at the beginning. READ THE TUTORIALS
Make sure you have enough time in your schedule to complete an online section
keep a schedule and stay with it. it gets easier and be sure to ask questions if you have them
Do not take this course unless you are very comfortable with Excel, very comfortable maneuvering around multiple sites simultaneously and very well organized. The material is not impossible, but the course is difficult and requires excellent time management, organizational and computer skills.
i would tell them to definitely take part in the discussions, or at the very least read the discussion boards, because they really help.
Stay on task, it take time and cannot be put off until the last minute. I found having the book infront of me very helpful. Printing off the tutorials or at least the more challenging one was beneficial. I liked taking the test right after doing the homework.
stay on point, spread out the work over the time given for each section.
DO THE EXCELS FIRST! if you don't you will be taking double the amount of time on each homework assignment.
Read the chapters and make notes. It helps explain the answers you get from excel. Don't ever get behind!! Plan on spending 2-4 hours a day on this.
Be patient! Do exel, than homework, then test and then do the assignments. All the knowledge from following that order makes the assignments understandable.
Take notes, I just started to put some abreviations and symbols on flash cards and it's tremendous help.
A math background a MUST HAVE! Knowledge of EXCEL a MUST HAVE! Be prepared for all the software downloads...took days to get all the necessary software downloaded and organized on the computer.
Don't take this class, unless you have a firm grip on math and stats already.
you will need to dedicate a lot of time to this course

Put ALOT OF TIME INTO IT!!!
My best advice would be to not get discouraged at first. Especially with becoming familiar with using the excel program, it is very frustrating and discouraging at first. There is a huge learning curve for excel, and it took a couple of weeks for me to get used to it. Once you get used to it, though, it is no longer so frustrating and can actually be fun to do. After completing a large excel assignment, I would have a feeling of accomplishment and felt proud of my work. In short, future students - stick with it, it gets better quickly.
Don't procrastinate! Don't take this class if you're not fully dedicated to school work. Take a lot of notes so that when you get to the final exam it'll be much easier to figure out to do things way back in previous chapters. Best advice I can give. I don't know how I would have survived without notes.
If you work full time: Don't take this class along with any other class. I work full time and took 2 online classes this semester. Never in my life have I had such a difficult time managing my time. I am a very organized person, and found it nearly impossible to get through all of the material in this class, and still have time for anything in my other class. Also, the other class I took did not have any assignments to turn in, or bi-weekly exams. There were 2 exams for the entire semester, with 3 essays to write for each exam, and I still had a hard time getting through that other class, because most of my "free" time was consumed with statistics. For an introductory course, I would say this class was very demanding and time consuming!
Read the material in each chapter to get a thorough understanding of the concepts. Then before doing the excel assignments, follow the excel manual to develop templates for competing the assignments.
Get the manual. Don't just download it off the internet. For me it was easier to have the book in front of me.
| I would suggest to buy the book. I
thought it was going to be easier to try to use the eBook, but I felt
when I got the book it was easier. Also, take notes on each section. I felt more prepared doing the assignments and tests when I made notes. |
Give yourself enough time to complete all of the assignments. It was helpful for me to do the hw in one day and take the test on the same day, that way the information was fresh in my mind. I also made study guides for the final, even though they didn't work out so well.
Look through the course schedule so you know exactly what's ahead of you, that way you don't fall behind or can't say you didn't know what you had to do and when you had to do it. Leave time to really look through your book and go through your homework because some things can be very time consuming. DEFINITELY use your View an Example option if your stuck on a problem because it's very helpful.
