"I’m Professor Barbara Van Syckle and we’re going to explore the world of business together. I have owned three small businesses; been a board of director’s president for a non-profit corporation; traveled to China, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, British Columbia, Alberta, Kenya, Tanzania, Belgium, Germany, France, Poland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Newfoundland, and Russia; lived on the island of Aruba; authored books; conducted an economic analysis for the Russian government while living in Pyatigorsk; and had an apartment in Amsterdam. India is the next stop in 2008.

My husband, our black and chocolate Labrador Retrievers, and I split our time between homes in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Thunder Lake in the Upper Peninsula, and Jackson, MI when we are not traveling here or abroad.  We are passionate about art, antiques and animals. We also spend time snowshoeing, canoeing, primitive camping, hiking, log cabin living, and adding to our antique and art collections. We volunteer with a variety of start-up companies, working with entrepreneurs to get their ventures "up and running" as part of our family's community service. We are deeply committed to multiple environmental issues as well.

I look forward to working with you this semester in whatever field of business you find fascinating. I believe that education is a priceless treasure; the mark of a civilized society. The aim of education should be to promote intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development. Real learning needs to deal with the whole person - body, mind, spirit and heart."
